Goals of The Poetry Lab The Poetry Lab fosters skills in 3 areas: 1. Youth Empowerment --------------------------------- By participating in The Poetry Lab, students.... ~ increase their understanding of themselves and the value of their lives ~ learn to use creative writing, journaling and poetry as a healthy coping strategy ~ learn to identify and express feelings ~ learn creative and positive means of self expression ~ increase self confidence and sense of pride 2. Community Building -------------------------------- By participating in the Poetry Lab, students.... ~ learn to give and recieve encouragement and support ~ increase sense of belonging ~ increase understanding of others ~ practice speaking and listening with respect ~ investigate themes of respect and tolerance through exposure to culturally diverse poetry that highlights the voices of marginalized people 3. Academic Success ------------------------------- By participating in the Poetry Lab, students.... ~ increase confidence, interest, and willingness to write ~ improve basic writing skills including: vocabulary, punctuation, grammar ~ learn the basic elements of poetry ~ increase comfort in reading their writing outloud in front of peers |
